Office Ergonomics: What You Need to Know

Home Office

What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is defined as “the science of fitting the job to the worker – not the worker to the job.”  When the opposite occurs, the worker could develop musculoskeletal disorders or MSDs.

MSDs are “injuries and disorders that affect the human body’s movement or musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, discs, blood vessels, etc.).”  Musculoskeletal disorders most often develop as the result of repeated exposure to ergonomic risk factors.  These risks can include high task repetition, forceful exertions, and repetitive or sustained awkward posture.  Exposure can occur over a period of time before symptoms occur.

Common MSDs include:

  • Tendonitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Muscle/tendon strain
  • Ligament strain
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Radial tunnel syndrome
  • and many more

What is the Importance of Ergonomics?

The goal of ergonomics is to design your office workstations so that it fits to you and allows for a comfortable working environment.

Ergonomics also must be incorporated and seen as a value. It needs to be built into company culture and be integrated into everything any organization does on a daily basis.

Implementing ergonomic solutions can make employees more comfortable and increase productivity.

An effective ergonomics program can also result in the following:

  • Better Health & well being
  • Fewer lost work days due to injury
  • Reduced medical & associated costs
  • Improved productivity & efficiency
